Subwoofers come in all different configurations, both of size and of enclosure design.  Most people design their system around the subwoofer of their choice, but that is completely backwards.  We will design the system first and then listen to which subwoofer blends most naturally with the rest of the speakers in the car.  A good subwoofer will integrate seamlessly into the audio package. They exist to add the lower 1/3rd of the audible range, but not to overpower the vocals and highs in the system.  Big booming bass is only good if it is recorded into the music you are listening to.  The bass frequencies are non-directional, so you should not be able to tell where they come from in your car.
